Impact-Resistant
What this actually involves.
Impact resistance is graded from Class 1 to Class 4 by a test that drops a steel ball onto the shingle and looks for cracking in the mat underneath. Class 4 is the top of the scale and the only one worth discussing in a county that gets hail most springs. The shingle achieves it with a polymer-modified asphalt, which stays flexible instead of shattering, so a stone that would bruise a standard shingle deforms it and it recovers.
The money argument is the insurance discount rather than the shingle. Most Texas carriers apply a premium reduction for a Class 4 roof, and in a hail-exposed ZIP code that discount is not small. Over the life of the roof it frequently covers most of the upgrade cost. The catch is that nobody applies it for you: you have to send the carrier the certificate for the product actually installed, and plenty of homeowners with a Class 4 roof are paying the standard rate because that step never happened.
How It Works
Call or text
Tell us what you are seeing. An active leak jumps the queue over a roof you are wondering about.
The inspection
Shingles lifted, flashing checked, the attic side looked at, and photographs of all of it.
You get the answer
Repair, replacement, or nothing yet. If a storm caused it, that changes who pays, and we say so.
The work, then the magnet
One crew start to finish, and a magnet over the drive, the lawn and the beds before anyone leaves.
The Difference
The parts that decide whether it lasts.
It also changes what a future storm does to you. A Class 4 roof still gets inspected after hail and can still be called, but the threshold is higher, and fewer marginal storms turn into a claim, a deductible and three weeks of disruption.
We install Class 3 and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, paired with the ventilation work that decides how long any shingle lasts here. That pairing is the right one. An impact-rated shingle on an unvented attic is an expensive shingle cooking from below.
The trade-off is honest: Class 4 costs more per square than a standard architectural shingle, the color range is narrower, and a very large stone will still damage it. What it buys is a higher floor, a lower premium, and one fewer claim cycle over the life of the roof.

Impact-Resistant, answered.
How much is the insurance discount?
It varies by carrier and ZIP code, and in hail-exposed parts of Ellis and Johnson County it is often one of the larger discounts available on a homeowner policy. Ask your agent for the number on your own policy before you decide.
How do I claim the discount?
Send your carrier the manufacturer certificate for the shingle that was installed. It is not automatic, and it is the step most people miss.
Is Class 4 hail-proof?
No. It is impact-rated, not impact-proof. Softball-sized hail damages everything. What Class 4 changes is how a normal spring storm treats the roof.
Does it look different from a normal shingle?
Not to anyone standing in the street. The color range is narrower than the full architectural line, which is worth checking before you set your heart on a shade.
Is it worth it if I am selling in two years?
Probably not for the discount, which needs time to pay back. It is worth something on the listing, and the transferable workmanship warranty is worth more.
