Emergency Tarping

What this actually involves.

An open roof is a different problem from a damaged roof. Once water is in the assembly it moves fast, and the cost stops being about shingles: wet insulation loses most of its R-value permanently, drywall that gets saturated has to come out, and anything that stays damp for more than a couple of days starts growing something. The first job is to stop the water, and the second is to prove what happened before it gets covered up.

Tarping is a temporary system done properly: the tarp runs over the ridge so water cannot get under the upper edge, it is fastened to boards rather than nailed through the field, and it extends past the damage on every side. A tarp thrown over a hole and weighted with bricks lasts until the next gust and then makes the hole bigger.

How It Works

01

Call or text

Tell us what you are seeing. An active leak jumps the queue over a roof you are wondering about.

02

The inspection

Shingles lifted, flashing checked, the attic side looked at, and photographs of all of it.

03

You get the answer

Repair, replacement, or nothing yet. If a storm caused it, that changes who pays, and we say so.

04

The work, then the magnet

One crew start to finish, and a magnet over the drive, the lawn and the beds before anyone leaves.

The Difference

The parts that decide whether it lasts.

Photographs come before the tarp, always. Once the roof is covered nobody can see what it looked like, and a claim adjusted three weeks later is adjusted from a photo file. A dated set from the day of the loss is worth more to a claim than any argument afterwards.

Inside matters too. Pulling a bit of wet ceiling to let water out of a bulging drywall bay is less damage than letting the bay collapse, and moving furniture off a soaked carpet before it wicks is free. Insurers expect a homeowner to take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, and they can reduce a payout when nobody did.

Active leaks jump the queue here. If water is coming in now, phone rather than fill in a form.

Before You Call

Emergency Tarping, answered.

What do I do while I wait?

Move what you can out of the way, put a bucket under an active drip, and if a ceiling is bulging, put a small hole in the low point of the bulge over the bucket. That controls where the water lands instead of letting the whole bay come down at once.

Does insurance pay for the tarp?

Emergency mitigation is usually covered as part of the claim, and carriers expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. Keep the receipt and the photographs.

How long can a tarp stay on?

Weeks, not months. It is a temporary cover, it degrades in UV, and a tarp left through a season becomes its own leak.

Can you tarp at night or on a Sunday?

Ask when you call. An open roof does not keep office hours, and the answer depends on where the crews are.

Will the tarp damage the roof further?

Not when it is fastened to boards laid over the shingle rather than nailed through the field. Nailing straight into the roof to hold a tarp puts holes in the part that was still working.
